Seniors Report (2016) for 2017 AGM
2016 has been another very successful year for the Ellon seniors. Total numbers of senior members are just a little down, but still number over 200. We have seen a few senior members join the happy bunch who play regularly on a Monday morning and this has added some welcome fresh banter to the start of the week. The weather has again this year proved to be less than ‘fair’ though we are all grateful to our hard working greens staff for keeping part if not all of the course open for us when the ground has been saturated. Thank you Bill & staff!.
The seniors AGM and prizegiving was well attended and the meal was superb. We were delighted that Sandra once again accepted the invitation to come along and help present the prizes and also extremely happy to have Neil Whyte our club vice-captain as our special guest. Neil took the opportunity to pass on the club council’s appreciation of how the seniors enhance the club’s well-being and reputation among other clubs in and around Aberdeenshire and wished us well for the coming season. Ali Michie in his first year as Senior’s captain held his own in the joke department and reports were heard from secretary, treasurer, CADS convenor and Buchan Seniors convenor. B.Haining has had to stand down from his position as rep. to the club council (personal reasons) but will be ably replaced by John Gatt.
The beginning of June saw the qualifying rounds of the Annual Ironside and Chadwick Trophys. The final was played between B Dunbar and G Young in the Ironside trophy (senior scratch championship). B Dunbar being the winner. The final of the Chadwick trophy (Senior handicap championship) was between A. Gibb and R. Murray with R. Murray emerging victorious. Well done and congratulations to both champions.
The senior gent’s stableford open was hosted by ourselves on the 10th June and attracted 41 home and 57 visiting players. Prize winners in the lower handicap section were : I. Campbell, G. Burnett (Murcar), D Reaper and S. Elmslie. In the higher handicap section the prize winners were : G. Sutherland, R. Murray, R. Rushton and A J Davidson. The event raised a net profit of £415.
Monday 25th July saw the second round of the Founders cup played with the winner over the two rounds being A.Douglas with 141. The runner up was I. Shaw with a very creditable 142. Congratulations to both.
The Buchan seniors have enjoyed another good year. The final of the 2015 House of Commons Cup was postponed twice due to inclement weather, and although we made it to the final we were narrowly beaten by Peterhead. However, the fighting spirit of the Buchan seniors team ensured that the year finished with notable success, specifically in winning the House of Commons Cup 2016 at Inverallochy. Well done gents!. R Murray is in process of finding replacement players for the coming season but reported that he has a healthy waiting list to ensure we do well again in 2017.
The CADS section have had a mixed season, B. Watson finished as our highest Ellon scorer, with our greatest success coming at Oldmeldrum where we won two sections out of the three B. Watson and A. Trail netting 12 valuable points. The CADS match here in Ellon was a success again this year with around £750 earned for the club, just over £110 pounds from raffle sales and good sales at the bar. Unfortunately, although we battled hard it was Alford Golf Club who came out on top this past year with ourselves finishing mid to bottom of the table. I am sure that we will come back stronger this coming year!.
It is with sadness that we recorded the passing of David Baker, Colin Fraser, Mike Owen, Donald Philip and Hendry Milne. We are grateful to have known them and appreciate the part they played during their years of membership.
Finally, please ensure that you keep yourself up to date by checking the notices which appear on the seniors notice board in the back corridor. Have a great season and if anybody hits a hole in one – mine is a dark rum and coke!.
